Spiralling Staircase is a reflection on home, memories of childhood and current spiral staircases underscored their dual symbolism of literal and figurative steps in life.
What inspired me in Do Ho Suh’s work was how he created a solid structure with fabric that still felt light. This contrast captivated me, and I wanted to incorporate it into my project. For my remake, I focused on the technical aspects of his art. I disassembled materials and let the fabric flow through a spiraling staircase. You can see, feel, and touch it, but you can't access it because the fabric hangs flat inside the staircase, connected only at the top and bottom and twisted in the middle. I installed it inside the school staircase so it can be viewed from different angles and lighting, allowing for multiple interpretations and perspectives. This project pushed me to explore installation art, a medium I had never tried before.
As I delved deeper into the concept of home, I remembered my childhood house with its spiral staircase connecting the three floors. I used to play there with my dolls, and it was a significant part of my home. My current home also has a spiral staircase, and I realized how essential staircases are, symbolizing both literal steps to another floor and figurative steps in life.
